“The Real Cost of War”
Saturday 22nd February 2020
Bull Street Quaker Meeting House (Priory Rooms)
40 Bull Street, Birmingham B4 6AF
A day of workshops, worship and conversation exploring the impact of war today and why we need to stop future ones from happening.
Organised by Church and Peace and the Fellowship of Reconciliation UK.
Main speaker will be Maria Biedrawa, a peace deacon resident in Northern France, who represents FoR France on the Church and Peace Board. Based on her work in the Central African Republic and South Sudan, she will be talking about what armed conflict really means for people, and what unarmed, non-violent civilians do to face it.
There will be three workshops, each of which will run twice:
1. Continuation of the discussion with Maria;
2. Asylum-seekers and the militarisation of borders – with Bridget Walker, steering group member of the Quaker Asylum and Refugee Network, represents QARN on the council of Rethinking Security;
3. The carbon footprint of the military, with Stuart Parkinson from Scientists for Global Responsibility.
We will begin the day with registration at 10.00; the morning plenary will begin at 10.30, with workshops before and after lunch and a final plenary, closing at 16.30.
