‘I will give you future and hope‘ (Jeremiah 29:11)
70 years of living nonviolence and resisting militarisation
(17 – 19 May 2019)
This is the theme of this year’s Annual General Meeting of Church and Peace from 17-19 May 2019 in the Christopheros Hotel, Berlin-Spandau.
Carried by the promise ‘I will give you future and hope’ (Jeremiah 29:11), many members of the Europe-wide ecumenical network Church and Peace have been engaged in active peacebuilding for 70 years, united in a spiritual and political struggle for nonviolence in the as follower of Jesus.
Church and Peace emerged as a result of the peace church dialogues of the post-World War II era. Beginning in 1949, the Historic Peace Churches European Continuation Committee (Mennonites, Quakers, Church of the Brethren) and the later Puidoux Conferences – bringing together the Historic Peace Churches and the International Fellowship of Reconciliation with the World Council of Churches (WCC) – developed fundamental reflection on peace theology and practical peacebuilding, which led to the founding of Church and Peace in 1978.
During this weekend in Berlin, we want to look back together and with guests on 70 years of active peacebuilding, give thanks, celebrate and look ahead. We want to reflect on the areas in which we can take action now and in the future to witness for peace in Europe, living out our commitment to the inspiration which gave rise to Church and Peace.
As part of the Annual General Meeting, an anniversary celebration will take place on Saturday 18 May 2019 in the Reformation Church of Moabit. We cordially invite members, friends and guests!
